Europe: “Solar thermal is the only technology to be enabled to obtain the A+++ label”

Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,

“It is a challenge these days to organise a general assembly in the market situation that we are in,” Robin Welling, President of the European Solar Thermal industry Federation (ESTIF), said in an interview with Solarthermalworld.org. The European solar thermal market will again shrink this year by around 9%, according to a first ESTIF survey. The good news: The Association of the European Heating Industry (EHI) and ESTIF have joined forces in a newly founded working group called European Solar Thermal Energy Standardisation & Certification (ESTESC) to tackle urgent technical issues, such as CE Marking, Global Certification or Eco-labelling/Eco-design. The President reminded everyone that it is a “groundbreaking fact that solar thermal is the only technology to be enabled to obtain the A+++ label”. The photo shows one of the workshops at the office of BSW Solar before the general assembly took place.

Best regards,

The editorial team

Poland: Stagnating Market after Strong Two-Year Growth
by Marcin Czekanski

After record-high growth in 2011 and 2012, the Polish solar thermal market will most probably only keep the market volume of last year - or even show a small reduction in 2013. The market development, however, has been interpreted differently by the national associations. The Association of Manufacturers and Importers of Heating Appliances which mainly represents flat plate collector manufacturers, has recorded a disappointing market performance this year, whereas the Society of Vacuum Tube Collector Importers and Distributors (about to be established) had seen a strongly growing market at least until September, when the regulations of the national residential incentive programme were changed.

Chile: President Inaugurates World’s Largest Solar Field with 27.5 MWth
by Bärbel Epp

In the middle of October, Chile’s President Sebastián Piñera inaugurated the world’s largest solar thermal field with 27.5 MWth (39,300 m² of collector area). The system supplies heat to the Gaby copper mine of state-owned mining company Codelco. The mining company profited from fixed energy prices, so Codelco could plan ahead without having to worry about market fluctuations, the president said. Indeed, Codelco has signed an agreement with the Chilean company Pampa Elvira Solar to deliver solar heat to the mining factory over a 10-year period. Pampa Elvira Solar owns the solar field and is responsible for its operation 24/7, 365 days a year.

India: Investment in Tank and Vacuum Tube Collector Production
by Jaideep Malaviya

The solar thermal industry in India is serving the strongly growing demand with additional manufacturing capacities of solar water heaters based on vacuum tube technology. V-Guard Industries and Inter Solar Systems for example have invested INR 180 million (EUR 2.1 million) and INR 100 million (EUR 1.2 million) in new factories, respectively. V-Guard Industries has now opened its second manufacturing line with a capacity of 90,000 solar water heater units annually. Inter Solar Systems plans to produce 64,000 tanks combined with vacuum tubes and 20,000 flat plate collector tanks in the first phase.

Austria Solar: “What we need now are innovations that we can present to the world!”
by Stephanie Banse

Since 1 October, the Austrian solar thermal association Austria Solar has had a new Managing Director. Doris Hammermüller replaced Roger Hackstock, who left the association on 30 June 2013 after leading it for twelve years. Hammermüller has had an interest in solar thermal since the 1990s. She was co-founder, board member and long-time representative of the association AEE Work Group Renewable Energy Lower Austria – Vienna and was the association's managing director between 2003 and 2013. Solarthermalworld.org spoke with her about the targets.

Portugal: Task 49 Develops Process Heat Integration Guidelines
by Eva Augsten
Mid-October this year, the members of the IEA SHC Task 49 on solar process heat met in Évora, Portugal, to discuss, among other things, the first version of the integration guidelines for solar process heat systems. They are part of the design guidelines - one of the main goals of the Task. According to Operating Agent Christoph Brunner, the Task’s members plan to publish the integration guidelines in early 2014 after an internal review.
