Namibia: Solar Water Heaters as Demand Side Management Measure

Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,

Namibia has an abundance of solar irradiation – but a lot of electric hot water boilers. Solar water heaters are seen as a strong demand-side measure to save about 30 % of the electricity consumption across the country. The Namibia Energy Institute promotes the Solar Water Heating Vision 2030, which envisages 0.5 m² of installed solar water heater area per inhabitant by 2030. This would cover almost all hot water requirements in residential, as well as public buildings. We wish all our readers a successful and effective realisation of their personal long-term solar visions. We are proud to announce that we will continue publishing the monthly solarthermalworld.org newsletter in 2015.

Have a good read and sunny regards

Great Britain: Performance of UK Green Deal Scheme
by Chris Laughton
UK Energy Minister Greg Barker, initiator of The Green Deal, called it a “flagship energy efficiency programme” during the launch of the scheme in the beginning 2013. One and half years later Barker stepped down as minister and the statistics of the Green Deal shows a rather poor performance despite more than half-a-billion pounds of taxpayers’ money being spent. By September 2014 the 350,000 Green Deal Assessments have led to only 6,000 approved finance plans of which only four were for solar water heating systems.

USA: A Brochure Highlights 27 Commercial Case Studies
by Bärbel Epp

“We use solar-heated water,” says a large advert sign in front of the Buggy Bath Car Wash in Bozemann, in the US state of Montana. The owner decided to install a solar water heater system not just to save money, but also to attract customers. This solar car wash is one of 27 commercial solar heating and cooling case studies which were described in a new study released in October 2014 by the Solar Energy Industries Association (SEIA). The report is the first of its kind and focuses on the technical, as well as the economical aspects of the installations.

Argentina: San Luis Province Promotes Solar Thermal
by Alejandro Diego Rosell

The Plan Provincial Termosolar promotes the use of solar thermal technology in several small towns in central Argentina’s San Luis Province. After the two success stories in La Calera und Batavia, the town next in line will be La Carolina, where the local government is currently assessing the energy demand of the municipality’s households. Once the survey is finished, the results will show how many households can adhere to the plan, and the local government will invite tenders in order to supply the publicly funded solar water heaters.

Canada: Aéronergie’s Acquisition of Enerconcept Leaves Company and Product Names Intact
by Bärbel Epp

At the beginning of October, Canadian air collector manufacturer Enerconcept became part of Canadian engineering company Aéronergie. Aéronergie is a young company, founded three years ago. Aéronergie and Enerconcept have been working together since 2012, the former as a complete solution provider and the latter as an installer. Both companies realised a number of projects together by offering comprehensive packages to industry owners and reducing their heating costs by 60 to 90 %. The photo shows one of these projects - a 230 m² Lubi wall with a cross-flow heat recovery unit at the industrial painting specialist Fuzion TK in the town of Drummondville in the Québec province.

Kosovo: Loan and Grant Funding of Sustainable Energy Projects
by Frank Stier

By declaring independence from Serbia in 2008, Kosovo became Europe’s youngest nation with 1.8 million inhabitants. Still, Kosovo faces plenty of severe challenges, such as a skyrocketing unemployment rate and an environment seriously harmed by fifty-year old coal power plant Kosovo A. The Kosovo Civil Society Consortium for Sustainable Development demands a shift in the state’s energy strategy, away from carbon-rich lignite to clean renewable energy resources. A number of international financial institutions already give soft loans to municipal and private borrowers for energy efficiency measures and renewable energy projects.
