Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,
Participants of 20 initiatives from 16 European countries gathered on 7 and 8 November in Prague, Czech Republic, to evaluate the European Solar Days 2011 and plan the 2012 campaign that takes place from 1 to 13 May 2012. The European Solar Days are a successful event with a proven formula, demonstrated by the more than 8,000 events organised in 19 countries throughout Europe this year. Together, they attracted about half a million people. Representatives from Sweden and Ukraine attended the meeting as guests, because these countries will join the European campaign in 2012.
Best wishes

Great Britain: Launch of the UK Renewable Heat Incentive
by Chris Laughton
After considerable delays and uncertainty, the UK’s Department for Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has finally launched the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) scheme on 28 November 2011. The first phase of the tariff support is targeted at the non-domestic sector. This includes businesses, public sector, charities, not-for-profit organisations or industry which contributes to 38% of the UK’s carbon emissions. The tariff for solar thermal is set at Pound Sterling (GBP) 0.085 (EUR 0.09) per generated kWh for 20 years. Collector array sizes of up to 200 kW are currently supported. Installations that were previously completed after 15 July 2009 will be eligible.

Christiane Egger
After running for 28 months, the IEE So-Pro project to develop and promote solar process heat ended in September 2011. Project Leader Christiane Egger presented a successful programme in a video interview with Solarthermalworld.org conducted at the Estec 2011 in Marseille: more than 90 energy screenings in various industrial companies, about 160 persons trained, 990 participants of round-table events and conferences, 21 publications in 5 languages, 7 pilot projects in operation and about 10 in the pipeline.

USA: Massachusetts Supports Commercial Solar Systems with up to USD 25,000
by Eva Augsten

In Massachusetts, a new support programme for large-scale solar thermal systems has come into effect recently. Building owners can now apply for grants of up to USD 25,000 (residential and commercial systems) or even USD 30,000 (systems on public buildings) thanks to the Commonwealth Solar Hot Water Commercial Pilot Program. Pre-studies can also be funded with up to USD 10,000 – applicants have only to pay 25 % of the costs themselves and will receive the remaining as a grant. The new programme is an addition to the Commonwealth Solar Hot Water Residential Program (up to 4 residential units), which came into effect in February 2011 and subsidized 200 systems so far.

India: MNRE Memorandum Bans Import of Storage Tanks, Manifolds and Mounting Systems
by Jaideep Malaviya

Because of a comparably lower price, vacuum tube collectors are becoming more and more popular in India. Based on a capacity of 100 litres of warm water per day, an average thermosiphon system with flat plate collectors is sold at INR 20,000 (EUR 208), whereas a solar water heater with a vacuum tube collector costs on average INR 16,000 (EUR 167). To protect the business of the around 60 flat plate collector manufacturers in India, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) issued a memorandum on 20 October 2011. Its most important sentence says that, “manufacturers shall import no components other than ETCs (Evacuated Tube Collectors)”.

Austria: Bending and Laser Welding in One Production Step
by Bärbel Epp

Austrian collector manufacturer Tisun GmbH started operating a new type of absorber production machine at the beginning of November 2011. Developed and delivered by Austrian machine supplier DTEC GmbH, the special feature of the Pulsspeed 278/556 Bender is its ability to bend and laser-weld parts in a single production step. DTEC have patented the three-dimensional head which bends, forms and welds the piping to the absorber plate. One employee is enough to operate the machine.
