This paper from 2007 looks into the energy needs of the Southern African Power Pool (SAPP) which is a consortium of countries in Southern Africa represented by their national power utility companies. The paper indicates that the critical concern for this region is that the electricity demand cannot be met beyond 2010.
The authors argue that solar thermal technology should be considered as the energy source of choice for the SAPP region. The paper states that solar thermal technology proves to be mature enough and provides proper economic and environmental advantages. Also from a social perspective, solar thermal would provide a solution for the areas which are too remote to be connected to the grid.
