Development of the Solar Thermal Market in the APEC Economies (2009)

This report was undertaken by the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Energy Working Group in 2009, with the objective to improve the development of the solar energy market within sponsoring APEC economies. The report identifies the most efficient technologies, the barriers to further market develpment, and mechanisms needed to overcome them. It also provides a case study of a Coopper Electrowinning Plant in Chile.

Within this, various mining sectors of APEC member countries - including copper, aluminium, zinc, gold, silver and saltpeter - are identified as having high potential for future solar thermal uptake, because of the high fuel consumption involved with providing low-temperature process heat.

The most serious barrier for APEC members is identified as the lack of information provided to end-users on the technologies and their costs. The report calls for more governmental information campaigns across the grouping, along with differentiated tax structures for industrial solar thermal installations to offset their disproporionately high burden.
