China: Strategic Cooperation Agreements on Technology Transfer

Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,

The Chinese central government has big plans for solar district heating in regions such as Tibet. Additionally, there is great demand for solar industrial heat to replace energy generated by coal boilers. To speed up the deployment of large-scale solar heating and cooling systems, China’s collector manufacturers have sought strategic partnerships with international research organisations and specialised manufacturers abroad. The photo on the left shows the signing ceremony of a 5-year cooperation agreement between CanmetEnergy, a leading research and technology organisation on clean energy in Canada, and vacuum tube collector manufacturer Sunrain Solar Energy from China in June. As much as CAD 5 million is said to be spent on training courses and demonstration plants with seasonal borehole heat storage. The photo on the right was taken in May, when the Chinese Haier Group, one of the world’s largest manufacturers of household appliances, acquired a 51 % stake in Austrian collector manufacturer Greenonetec, based in St Veit in southern Austria. The objective of the two shareholders is to establish the licensed production of large-scale flat plate collectors in China and offer selected Haier products with the help of Greenonetec’s distribution network in Europe.

Have a good read and sunny regards

Global Status Report 2017: Key SHC Data on Markets and Policy
by Bärbel Epp

REN21’s Renewables 2017 Global Status Report shows how the 20 largest solar thermal markets in the world developed in 2016. Significant growth was reported from Denmark (84 %), Mexico and India (6 % each). Except for the Danish market, last year was a challenging one for key European sales countries because of factors such as low oil and gas prices, declining demand from homeowners and reduced interest in solar thermal among installers. Consequently, there has been a notable decrease in market size in Poland (-58 %), France (-35 %), Austria (-19 %) and Germany (-8 %).

Italy: New Solar Cooling Systems and Opportunities
by Riccardo Battisti

Government incentives have been pushing solar cooling forwards in Italy. The large budget available for national incentive scheme Conto Termico 2.0 has made several service providers optimistic about the future of the Italian market. For example, Mario Colaiemma from Maya, the European distributor of Japanese Yazaki chillers, said that “Italy was the key market for our solar thermal-driven chillers in 2016.” The photo shows a typical solar cooling system based on slightly below 50 m² of vacuum tube collectors connected to a 17.6 kW chiller.

IEA SHC: Solar Heat Worldwide Highlights Remarkable Achievements and Addresses Challenges
by Bärbel Epp

In late May, the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme published its annual report titled Solar Heat Worldwide. It is the most comprehensive study of solar heating and cooling markets around the globe. Based on data from 66 countries, the most recent report has grown from 76 pages in 2016 to 86 in 2017. It includes a new section which highlights last years’ encouraging market development of megawatt systems for solar district heating and solar process heat and a second part providing in-depth figures about the national and global markets of 2015.

USA: Concerted Actions in California and New York

It will require concerted actions by the industry to keep solar heating and cooling on the agenda of politicians and administrators of incentive programmes in the United States. The Californian solar industry achieved a partial victory in mid-May, when the state assembly approved the extension of rebates for gas-replacing solar thermal systems under the California Solar Initiative - Solar Thermal by 2.5 years, even though the industry had called for five. On the east coast, negotiations with the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority are still underway for a follow-up of the statewide solar water heater rebate programme, which ended in December 2016.

Hungary: Government Strengthens Support for Renewables and Energy Efficiency in Residential Market
by Frank Stier

While Hungary’s plans to add two Russian reactors to the Paks nuclear power station have caused quite the stir, the eastern European country’s green energy policies seem to have gone largely unnoticed. On 8 May 2017, during the first Nordic Green Light business forum in Hungary’s capital Budapest, László Szabó, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade, said that his country was striving for a more demand-responsive energy infrastructure by utilising locally available renewable sources such as wind, solar, geothermal and biomass. As a first step, it has started to offer zero-interest loans to homeowners for improving building efficiency and installing renewable energy systems.

Solar Heat for Industrial Processes will be the topic of the second Solar Academy webinar offered by the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme. During the webinar, speakers are going to present selected demonstration plants and their planning, list current and future developments of collector technologies and hydraulic designs, and highlight investment opportunities. We invite all stakeholders to join the 1.5-hour webinar scheduled for Thursday, 6 July 2017, from 1 to 2.30 pm GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
