ISH in Germany: Easy Selling – Heating Industry Starts Digital Marketing Journey

Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,

With more than 200,000 visitors from 61 countries and 2,482 exhibitors, the ISH trade fair in Frankfurt, Germany, set a new record this year. The big five of heating system manufacturers across Europe – Bosch Thermotechnik with its brands Buderus and Junkers, Viessmann, Vaillant, Ariston and its Elco brand, and BDR Thermea with its brands Remeha, Brötje and De Dietrich – welcomed tens of thousands of installers to the international five-day business-to-business fair at the beginning of March. Two of these five businesses – Bosch and Viessmann – focused on digital marketing, remote control and maintenance tools, which pushed product innovations to the side walls of the exhibition space. An insider called it the “Thermondo effect”. This fast-growing start-up founded in 2015 in Berlin, Germany, has enjoyed great success in selling heating systems on the web and prompted the management of heating companies to shift their attention towards online sales strategies.

Have a good read and sunny regards

Europe: Comparing Solar Keymark Data on Collectors with Foil or Double Glass Cover to Ones Without
by Bärbel Epp

Cost cuts in the supply chain are key in large solar district heating plants: Two vital factors are fast installation and less hydraulic work on site. The answer by manufacturers to these challenges has been to design large-scale prefabricated collectors. The annual collector yield shown on Solar Keymark certificates for different temperatures makes it possible to compare large-scale collector modules (above 10 m² of gross collector area) with or without a foil or second glass cover.

Miraah in Oman: “Ahead of Schedule and Under Budget”

Replacing gas with sunshine for enhanced oil recovery (EOR) is a cost-effective solution. This is the key message of US-based company Glasspoint, which has mobilised the biggest investment ever in a solar steam-producing unit in Oman. “Miraah construction is currently ahead of schedule and under budget,” confirmed Katie Struble, Director of Marketing at Glasspoint. “We are on track to produce steam from the first greenhouse block, of 36 total, before the end of this year. Our team recently achieved over 500,000 safe working hours on site."

Spain: Market Shrinks Again in 2016, Outlook Slightly Better for 2017
by Alejandro Diego Rosell

Spain’s solar thermal market experienced a year-on-year drop of 12 % in 2016 and ended up at 212,190 m² (149 MWth) of newly installed collector area. As in 2015, the main reasons for the contraction were the lack of finished newbuilds and the end of regional incentives, such as the ones in the Spanish region of Andalusia. However, the construction industry is slowly starting to recover and new government incentives may boost the market this year.

Poland’s Mazovia Region is one of nine regional actors which have worked together with the Institute for Renewable Energy, the Polish partner, on the project SDHp2m: Solar District Heating – From Policy to Market. On 16 March 2017, IEO organised a workshop where 60 stakeholders from the district heating industry and municipal authorities met to discuss the details of strategies and activities which could support the development of solar district heating. Solarthermalword.org sat down with IEO’s Aneta Więcka to talk about opportunities, barriers and the current situation of the SDH market in the Mazovia Region and the rest of country.

IEA SHC Task 50: LightingRetrofitAdviser.com for Investors and Planners
by Bärbel Epp
Lighting systems are rarely upgraded: For example, in Germany, retrofits can only be found in 3 % of the existing building stock and 75 % of lighting systems are out of date, as they are older than 25 years. To support planners and investors in their decision on what would be the most apt lighting retrofit, the researchers of Task 50 of the IEA Solar Heating and Cooling Programme, Advanced Lighting Solutions for Retrofitting Buildings, have launched a website called www.lightingretrofitadviser.com and an app for Android and iOS devices. Both provide stakeholders with information about successful case studies of lighting retrofits in buildings, a database of technologies as well as tools, for example, to give direct onsite support for decision making, whether it is sensible to retrofit a lighting system.
