Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,
The
Chinese industry’s great efforts to open up new applications, such as
space heating, industrial process heat and space cooling, are starting
to bear fruit. The solar thermal market decreased by only 9 % in 2016,
after a sharp decline of 17 % in 2015 and 18 % in 2014. The statistics
presented during the annual assembly of the Chinese Solar Thermal
Industry Federation in early December (see photo) showed 39.5 million m²
(27.7 GWth) to have been installed last year, 60 % of what
had been set up in the peak year of 2013. The industry now needs to go
to great lengths to meet the target from the draft of the most recent
Five-Year Plan: a total solar thermal capacity of 0.8 billion m² by the
end of 2020. Achieving this target would almost double the area that had
been installed at the end of 2015 (0.442 billion m²). It will certainly
be a big challenge, as the government has only issued policies for PV
and CSP after the Five-Year Plan’s publication.
Have a good read and sunny regards
