Global Tour through the World of Solar Thermal Applications

Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,

Solar thermal technology - widespread and diverse in its application – needs flexible system integrators and outstanding protagonists to open up markets worldwide. Only an industry convinced of its country’s solar potential – like the one in the Ukraine (left) – will hold on to its solar business despite consumer caution, high inflation and a legal situation that is anything but simple. Ladakh, a high-mountain area in northern India, has the country’s highest solar water heater density thanks to Jigmet Takpa, Project Director at the Ladakh Renewable Energy Development Agency (LREDA). Takpa has been the driving force behind the fast solar thermal development in this region of high passes (middle). Despite the lack of support in Colombia, established solar thermal system importers, such as Gestión Integral Energética, have been realising an increasing number of systems in the hotel and healthcare sector. Just recently, GIE has set up a 150-collector field at Bogotá’s Hotel Plaza (right).

Have a good read and sunny regards

Czech Republic: “Low financial support and high administrative burden”
by Vladislava Adamenkova
Almost a year after the first call for applications for Czech support scheme Nová Zelená Úsporám (New Green Savings programme) in August 2013, the same negative attitude still pervades the solar system supplier segment. Companies have especially criticised the low financial support and the high administrative burden. The second call of the programme started on 1 April 2014 under the same dissatisfying conditions for solar water heating systems. The Czech Republic’s market volume saw another drop in 2013, this time by 11 %.

Denmark: 23 MWth Cover 55 % of Heat Demand of 1,500 Households
by Eva Augsten

June 2014 was the official end of EU project Sunstore4, which contributed EUR 6.1 million to the extension and the monitoring of Marstal´s district heating plant. The town on the Danish island of Aeroe receives 55 % of its heat from the extended 33,000 m² collector field. The pit heat storage installation, the first of its kind, was a difficult undertaking - the team had to cope with heavy rainfalls in the summer and a thick layer of ice in the winter of 2012, when the underground storage was still not covered.

Hawaii/California: Sopogy Goes into Liquidation after More than a Decade in Business
by Eva Augsten
After the Hawaiian manufacturer of parabolic trough systems, Sopogy, has stopped operations, its assets are now being liquidated as well. According to Pacific Business News (PBN), an attorney based in Los Angeles is handling the insolvency proceedings. Darren Kimura founded Sopogy in Palo Alto, California, in 2001. During the following ten years, the start-up collected more than USD 35 million in venture capital and strategic financing from several investors. “The financing was completed in October 2012 and in this transaction, a majority of the company was purchased by the new investors,” Kimura explains the history of the company.

Belgium: Commercial Customers Can Choose among Several Solar System Variants
by Bärbel Epp

In Wallonia, Belgium’s southern region, the favourable incentives make it quite a joy to calculate solar heat prices for retirement homes. The home with 110 flats or rooms described in this case study achieves solar heat prices of 20 EUR/MWh over 20 years, with a solar fraction of 76.5 % in domestic hot water demand. If the net collector area is at least 2 m² per flat or room, subsidy scheme Soltherm grants EUR 1,500 for each housing unit. “We want the customer to choose the system size and design which best suits their needs and adheres to their specific requirements,” explains Bertrand Fontaine, CEO of the Belgium solar thermal system supplier Sunoptimo. “We carry out around 50 simulations based on the project’s specifications in order to produce the different graphs, data and tables of our individual customer brochure.”

Brazil: Solar Thermal Market Diversifies in 2013
by Bärbel Epp
In 2013, the Brazilian solar thermal market grew significantly in both the unglazed segment of swimming pool absorbers and the glazed collector segment of solar hot water systems. According to the annual market statistics gathered in February 2014 by DASOL, the Solar Heating Department of the Brazilian Association of Refrigeration, Air Conditioning, Ventilation and Heating, ABRAVA, the glazed collector market continued its steep increase with another 20 % of growth last year. The total newly installed solar collector area was 1.38 million m² – 20 % more than in 2012. The share of glazed collectors was again at around 55 %.
