SHC 2013: 400 Experts from 37 Countries Met in Freiburg, Germany

Dear Solarthermalworld.org Reader,

Europe’s first International Conference on Solar Heating and Cooling for Buildings and Industry, the SHC2013, has been a success. Between 23 and 25 September, around 400 participants from 37 different countries met in Freiburg in the south of Germany to discuss research, technology and market-related issues. This was almost double the number of experts which had joined the first SHC conference last year in San Francisco. The 15 keynote speeches, 90 oral and 140 poster presentations covered a huge variety of topics. In addition to highlighting some of the conference’s debate, this Solarthermalworld.org Newsletter will also report on the SHC Solar Award, the Solarthermalworld.org first ever research video competition and an exhibition of polymer collectors and tanks accompanying the SHC2013.

Best regards,
Solarthermalworld.org team

European Energy Label: A+++ for Solar Packages in 2015
by Bärbel Epp

On 6 September 2013, the official journal of the European Commission published the regulations for the eco-design and energy labelling of water, space and combi heaters under the Ecodesign Directive (2005/32/EC). The documents were also translated into all EU-member states’ languages. Until now, this has been the latest official step after an eight-year political process. It also marks the start of a two-year transition period up to September 2015 when the regulations will come into effect.

Italy: Comparing Conto Termico with Tax Deductions
by Valeria Verga

This summer has changed solar thermal clients’ access to incentives in Italy. Since the beginning of August 2013, customers have been able to deduct as much as 65% of their investment costs into a solar thermal system from tax payments over the next 10 years. In addition, the Portal Termico web page has been offering individuals and companies the option to apply for the new renewable heating incentive - called Conto Termico - since mid-July. Two aspects make the Conto Termico particularly attractive compared to tax deductions: The fact that there is no deadline and the way the rebate is paid.

Germany: Industrial Solar and Viessmann Work on Standardised Process Steam System
by Eva Augsten

Together with the German Aerospace Centre's Institute of Solar Research, DLR, German companies Industrial Solar and Viessmann are working on a standardised hybrid system based on solar energy and fossil fuel to generate steam for industrial applications. The so-called SolSteam project is being funded by the German Federal Environment Ministry, BMU, and its first milestone is to find a customer for the pilot plant. The goal is to feed the steam-water mixture directly into the boiler.

Poland: Rules Change for Vacuum Tube Collectors
by Marcin Czekański

On 2 September, the Polish National Fund for Environmental Protection and Water Management (NFOŚiGW) announced new requirements for its residential subsidy scheme on its website. From 1 October 2013 on, the grant cap will refer to a collector’s aperture area and not its gross area. "The revision is needed, because new collector models with much bigger gross surface than aperture area have started to appear on the market," NFOŚiGW explained.
