The Value Proposition of Solar Water Heating In California (2009)

Submitted by Dan Fernandez on June 15, 2012

This report was written for the California State Legislature by the California Solar Energy Industries Association (CAL SEIA). It was commissioned by the California State Legislature for use in their deliberations on establishing a solar thermal water heating incentive program for California.

The report finds a number of short term and long term benefits to solar thermal water heating. In the short term, the report says that solar thermal water heating installations will save “111-345 cents/therm of SWH for commercial installations and 94-285 cents/therm of SWH for residential installations.” This does not include environmental or health costs estimates, which will accrue over time. These benefits will only grow over the long term as carbon emitting energy grows in price.
