Solar Water Heating Developments at DOE (2007)
This report and presentation was written by Robert Hassett of the U.S. Department of Energy’s Office of Building Technologies. It focuses on DOE efforts to develop a low cost solar thermal water heating system that could be integrated into the “net-zero” home.
The DOE believes that solar thermal water heating could be a staple of the zero energy home, which utilizes many different renewable energy sources to make a home have no carbon footprint. Their research focus is on combined systems, systems for cold climates, and systems that can be used throughout whole buildings. DOE has been experimenting with new materials and new forms of a drainback system, but as of this report, was held up regarding certification.
