Solar Thermal Energy: An Industry Report (2008)

Submitted by Todd Costello on March 18, 2010

This report was arranged by Solar-Thermal in 2008 and includes an overview on the benefits of solar energy. It then goes on to make a comparison between solar energy and photovoltaic energy, explaining how solar energy concentrates the light from the sun to create heat, while photovoltaic directly converts the sun’s light into electricity.

Solar Thermal Energy is currently the most cost-effective solar technology on the market today. In comparison with fossil fuels, solar energy can still be expensive to use. Therefore, much time and effort has been dedicated to making solar energy more economical. The two methods are line focus collection and point focus collection.

Spain and Australia are leading the way in solar thermal energy production.

Despite the advancements in solar thermal energy, there are also many obstacles that exist such as the abundance and low pricing of coal and the land requirements needed to sustain the production of solar energy.
