The Residential Solar Water Heaters Market in Lebanon in 2011 (2012)
This report was commissioned and produced by the Global Environmental Facility (GEF) as part of the Global Solar Water Heating Market Transformation and Strengthening Initiative. It gives a comprehensive overview of the Lebanese Solar Water Heating (SWH) market in 2011, and evaluates the results of the national financing mechanism introduced in Lebanon in 2010 through the project.
The market overview is derived from an investigation of sales volumes through personal communications with companies' directors, and a survey based on loan applications submitted to the Central Bank of Lebanon through commercial banks.
The study finds that 30% of the 12,197 individual residential solar water heating units installed during 2011 were through the interest-free loan programme launched by the Central Bank of Lebanon and the Lebanese Ministry of Energy and Water (MEW). 48% of these installed units benefitted from the $200 subsidy offered by the MEW.
These results support the report's conclusion that there has been a positive driving impact of the SWH subsidy and interest-free loan initiative. with the scheme affording both economic feasibility and promising growing potential to the Lebanese SWH market.
