Opportunities for kWh Price Improvement of Solar Thermal Electricity Plants (2006)

Submitted by Todd Costello on April 7, 2010

This research paper was from the Utrecht University’s Department of Science, Technology and Society in 2006.

The goal of this paper is to go over how a solar thermal electricity plant can be competitive to fossil fuel based on cost. This can be accomplished when you look at the construction criteria of the solar thermal plants.

It gives background information on solar thermal power conversion, and concentrated solar thermal power. Aside from the actual cost of construction and production of actual energy from the plants, it goes over the traditional analysis of “incorrectly overestimating the cost of renewable-based electricity.”

And after the cost analysis, a hybrid design is the proposed solution, with a specific location identified in the paper.
