Heat Delivery Performance in Combination Solar Thermal Systems: Strategies for Increasing Delivery Temperature (2012)

Submitted by Dan Fernandez on June 20, 2012

This conference abstract report was written by James H. Dontje of Gustavus Adolphus College. It reports on his research into performance in combination solar thermal systems and how to increase heat delivery.

When residential hot water and space heating systems are retrofitted to solar thermal, they often are not designed for optimal delivery of the new heat source. The report offers two main strategies to ameliorate this situation. The first is to reduce the collector storage volume to collector area ratio. The second is to change the delivery of solar thermal energy directly from the collectors to the space heating load. The researcher backs this up with empirical data.
