Current Status and Perspectives of Solar Thermal in Ecuador (2011)

Submitted by Raquel Ponte Costa on January 27, 2012

This presentation was delivered during the UNEP (United National Environment Programme) Regional Workshop jointly held with OLADE (the Latin American Energy Organization) in Chile (June 2011) in the framework of the Solar Water Heating Transformation and Strengthening Initiative. Its author is Mr. Luis Manzano from the Ecuadorian government.

The first part addresses a detailed overview of the political and regulatory framework of the country, with a special emphasis on the support for renewable energy sources and energy efficiency through the newly developed National Plan for the Quality of Life (Plan Nacional del Buen Vivir). The second part focuses on the government’s efforts to support the expansion of the use of solar thermal technologies in the country, especially through regulatory and financial incentives.

Following an analysis of the economical and societal impact of the use of solar thermal technologies in different applications, the presentation outlines Ecuador’s plans for the development of national manufacturers.
