Case Study: The Oakhurst Dairy (2009)

Submitted by Dan Fernandez on May 29, 2012

This case study was created by the Innovation Center for U.S. Dairy. It looks at a dairy in Maine, the Oakhurst Dairy, and their innovative use of solar thermal water heating and hot water recovery systems for their dairy farm operations.

The Oakhurst Dairy is committed to protecting the climate, and was looking for ways to reduce their carbon footprint. They ended up installing 72 thermal panels on their company’s headquarters for dairy processing. The system reduced Oakhurst Dairy’s oil consumption by 5,000 gallons a year. Also, they installed a hot water recovery system, which captures hot water heat that is not used the first time and recycles it back into the main system.
