Submitted by Dan Fernandez on June 19, 2012

This report was published by Alaska Sun, a coalition in Alaska promoting the use of solar energy. It reports on a solar thermal water heating installation undertaken by a citizen on his home in Alaska.

After outfitting his home with various energy efficiency technologies, the author realized that his main source of oil use in his home that was left was for water heating. He installed a flat plate collector seem, after noting that they had the greatest efficiency ate in various computer models that demonstrated collector efficiency in cold climates. One important piece of advice the author shares, is to avoid maintenance hassles in cold climates, always mount the collectors on a vertical wall which is sheltered from snow.
